Aim and purpose

This unit aims to give you the principles of microprocessors and the experience of programming a microprocessor system for the operation or control of peripheral devices

Unit introduction

Microprocessors can be found in a wide range of commercial, industrial and domestic applications such as robots, weighing scales, heating controls, and vending machines. This unit will provide an introduction to the terminology, architecture and programming concepts  related to microprocessor applications.

You will be introduced to the ways in which microprocessor-based systems can be applied, including industrial, commercial and domestic applications. You will examine a range of input and output devices, signal types and microprocessor interfacing to other devices and circuits. Finally you should be able to develop a microprocessor program using  software development tools


On completion of this unit you should:

1 Know how microprocessor-based systems can be applied

2 Understand the architecture and operation of a microprocessor system

3 Understand decimal, binary and hexadecimal number systems, instructions and subroutines

4 Be able to use a microprocessor development system to prepare and run a program.

This unit will give you an opportunity to examine a range of microprocessors, their design, programs and application.

    What is the learning platform for this module.

    When i have done these first 3 elactronic engineer courses, will i be qualified enough to fix domestic appliances? Cookers, washing machines etc?

      BTEC course are knowledge based and do not deliver practical skills
      BTEC will offer you a better understanding on how the electrical and electronic parts work, but if you need practical repair skills you could try your local college as they may have something specific for domestic appliances

    Hi for this course do you need to have software like cad downloaded to do it from home? And if you were to do a crazy amount of work per day could you complete it in a year (12 units)

      There is only the drawing unit that contains CAD and we provide details of free CAD downloads such as QCAD and AutoCAD

      Doing 12 units in 12 months is a big ask as there are 2 assessments per unit so that means completing the study and assessment every 2 weeks

      To do this you will need about 25 hours per week every week to get 12 units (24 assessments) done in 12 months
